Amelia's Rider Fitness Program

"Get fit, ride better." - It is as simple as that.

Your poor horse - you just can't seem to give clear aids. You're bouncing, leaning, balancing with your reins, and no matter what you do, you can't sit the trot.

To ride well, you must be strong, supple, straight, and in control of your body BEFORE you get in the saddle. Nothing is worse than bouncing around in the saddle and feeling completely out of control - not to mention that it makes the work harder and more confusing for your horse. In order to maximize your time in the saddle and expedite your progress you must do exercises designed specifically for riders. You can learn about riding and understand what your body should do, the hard part is getting your body to listen to your brain!

In 2014 I broke my collar bone and since then my left shoulder has not been quite right. My trainer was always telling me to bring my shoulder down and back. I literally could not do it without pain until I started working with Stephanie Seheult, D.P.T. Stephanie is a Physical Therapist who specializes in riders. She took me off of the horse and gave me specific exercises to help address the asymmetry in my left shoulder. When I got back on, I was able to activate the correct muscles and control my shoulder. It was like magic! In just one session, she had fixed the issue that had been holding me back for years!

I workout to ride better. I do specific exercises to target riding muscles and focus on symmetry, flexibility, and strength in my workout routines. If I workout before I ride I feel a huge difference in my horses. I know that you will feel this too.

Meet Dr. Stephanie Seheult, D.P.T.:

In this program, I work together with Stephanie to bring you carefully designed workouts for riders. You need specific workout routines to target your specific riding muscles. Jumping on the elliptical and lifting heavy weights to bulk up will not help you ride better.

Stephanie graduated with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy and Bachelors of Health Science from Loma Linda University in 2008. Also an avid equestrian, Stephanie has combined her passion for fitness, health and alignment with her passion for horses to help riders around the world.

Stephanie attended the USEF HSSM clinic given by Andy Thomas. Stephanie is now a part of a small group of physical therapists recognized by the USEF to treat equestrian athletes. She is currently contracted with USEF to work with all the riders who are invited to be a part of the developing dressage clinics.

"My hope is to be able to help riders of any level or ability improve their body awareness, balance and strength. I want to help them be the best team they possibly could be with their horse and to achieve their goals both on and off their beloved companions!"

Amelia Newcomb

Hi! I’m Amelia Newcomb, a Grand Prix rider and trainer based in Southern California. I have trained multiple horses and riders to the Grand Prix level and am currently a member of the USEF Development Program and recipient of the Carol Lavell Advanced Training Grant with my horse Harvard. I am passionate about teaching riders of all levels and helping you “learn to love your ride.”

With well over 50,000 hours in the saddle and training thousands of horses and riders, I can tell you that focusing on your riding position is the number one thing you can do to improve.

Riding your horse in balance from your seat is not only easier for the rider, but it’s more enjoyable and clearer for your horse to understand your aids.

I’ve designed this challenge to give you the education, support, and a deadline to give you the motivation you need to transform your position. I’ve taught thousands of horses and riders by using this system, and I KNOW it will work for you.

Is this suitable for an older rider?
Absolutely. Many rider training programs actually hurt and cause injury to riders. We've been very careful to design gentle yet effective exercises that will improve your riding - not make you so sore that you can't ride. We recommend that you go at your own pace and listen to your body.
What equipment will I need?
For this program you will need a mat, a wall, and a space to exercise. We also recommend getting a Thera-band although you can modify the exercises if you don't have one available.
